I am struggling to understand why the discussion continued about whether it should be 1 or 2 days before de-runging happens. There is a bigger problem than that and it is the way the ladder is not working at all. It astounds me that it was me that brought to everyones attention that after Mary passed away in August she proceeded to make her way to number 1 on our ladder after having bounced around between 10 and 5 for at least 2 weeks. Now I see that bookworms_rare appears at number 15 and has not moved at all and has been inactive for 1 month. Please, can someone explain how Larry who has not been active for over 5 months still bounced around from 14 to 8 or 7 or anywhere between. It does seem to defy all logic that Larry having been the longest of the inactive people that he would have fallen to 15 and not moved.

My point is: A person can play a morning game one day; the next day play at night, and they lose rungs. This happens because we are 24-hour days rather than calendar days.

Some things to bear in mind about how the ladder ranking works:
1, Inactive players in the top ten get moved down the ladder 5 rungs – this happens 4 times per day. Anyone in those 5 rungs will be moved up 1 rung.
      2. You are considered active if you have had a game recorded in the ladder or you have been derunged within the past 24 hours (1 day). Each person has a counter that keeps track of this.

So, if the person in the #10 spot is inactive they will move to #15 and everyone in #11-14 will move up 1 rung. Similarly for all those ranked #1-9. So now that #15 person becomes #14. If at the same time the #9 person is inactive as well, they will move to #14 pushing that same person to #13. And so it goes. This is all happening at the same time on the same day. So on that day at that time the #15 person can be pushed all the way to #10 position if the players ranked 6-10 are all inactive.

After this set of rung changes that #15 person has not played or been derunged so his/her inactivity counter has not changed. The next time the programming looks at the rankings in the ladder this person is inactive and can be moved down the ladder – back to #15 unless there were even more changes taking place. Once they get moved down the ladder rungs their inactivity counter will get moved back to 0 and another 24 hours has to go by before they are considered in active again.

If the vote currently in process gets approved we will see the inactivity counter looking at 48 hours (2 days) before a derunging takes place.

      I hope this helps.

Thanks for that explanation tlcmomca. It does not answer the question about some of the other problems. In the last week bookworms_rare who had dropped to 15 with the derunging did not move again. Because no activity actually creates a 'false' activity our inactive players remain active. That did not happen with bookworms_rare. For 2 weeks she sat on 15 and then dropped off the list of active players and in fact our active players only showed 14. My question was - how could someone who has only been inactive for just over a month hit the inactive players pile and someone who has not been active for nearly 7 months still remains in the active players group. Changing the time frame for derunging does absolutely nothing to the process of how the ladder and derunging works - it will only delay the inevitable. I can see one potential aggrivation that may come out of delaying the derunging process from 24 to 48 hours. It means that anyone sitting on number 1 on the ladder can now be inactive for 2 days which means that nobody else on the ladder has the chance to advance to number 1.
